Before The Cult made their breakthrough in the mainstream scene, they were performing under the moniker Death Cult. After a few lineup changes, Astbury and Duffy continued their work and changed their name. They continue to be a purveyor of their early sound but their incredible work with “She Sells Sanctuary,” “Love Removal Machine,” and “Rain,” eventually led to commercial success. During that time, the band steadily became recognized in the U.K.’s post-punk and new-wave scene. Their 1985 hit, “She Sells Sanctuary,” became their first official international breakthrough hit, peaking at number 15 on the U.K. chart and entering the charts in Canada and Ireland.
Their new album, Under the Midnight Sun, takes precedence this fall as the legendary band promotes their latest effort along with countless staples from their yesteryears. Featuring the lead single, “Give Me Mercy,” The Midnight Sun is the band's first studio album to come out in seven years, and it received rave reviews from fans and critics.
The tour is also set to take fans on a fantastic nostalgic trip as it will also highlight early material. The Cult, who made their career by staying true to their post-punk roots, will be performing 14 shows in the U.S., including a two-night run at the Pearl Concert Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada.
For their show on Friday, 27th October 2023, The Cult brings along special guest Cold Wave. The dark wave band was also one of the more influential purveyors of post-punk music during the early ‘80s. Similar to The Cult, Coldwave was one of the first bands to include gothic elements in their music.
Throughout the second half of the ‘80s, the band continued to dominate the chart with their subsequent hits like “Love Removal Machine,” “Fire Woman,” “Sun King,” Sweet Soul Sister,” and “Edie (Ciao Baby). Not only were they taking over the music circuit in the U.K. and Europe, but the band was also hitting the mainstream charts in the U.S. Their on-and-off time in music had the band go through many eras and numerous line-up changes. But original members Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy continue to keep The Cult alive with the help of current members, longtime drummer John Tempesta, bassist Charlie Jones, and keyboardist Mike Mangan.
